Benajarafe is based upon a beach of dusky sand. This small fishing village is still known for its hauls of sardines and anchovies but has also become a destination for local Spaniards escaping the tourist traps more typical of this coast.

The beach is family friendly with a kids park, sports facilities, a gentle slope and a Blue Flag rating. To the west, there are several beachfront restaurants and plentiful facilities. To the east, it gets more secluded, which attracts people looking to relax away from the throngs.

The capital of the area is the ancient market city Velez-Malaga, host to museums, art galleries, live events and fiestas. People seeking a livelier atmosphere can travel to Torre del Mar, where an international crowd gather in the cafes and restaurants along the promenade and bustling marina.

Golf greens are abundant and Anoreta Golf, 6 kilometres away, was designed by Ryder Cup winner Jose Maria Canizares. Walking routes, like the Ruta de la Pasa (the grape route), attract people to the rural interior.

Property

Benajarafe Alto is composed of townhouses and country homes, whereas Benajarafe Costa has modern residential developments. There are a few apartments but most buildings are either terraced or wholly detached.

Amenities

There are a few high street staples like a chemist and corner shop and the neighbouring towns of Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar have everything else you need.

Transport

The closest airport is Malaga, which is a 30 minute drive. Local buses are frequent and connect Benajarafe with Melaga, Velez-Melaga, Nerja, Periana, Riogordo and Almayate.

Employment

There isn’t much employment in Benajarafe itself, just the odd au pair, house-sitting or handyman roles. However, nearby Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga have thriving economies, and Malaga is just a short drive away.

Health

The Centro de Salud de Benajarafe offers GP services. The nearest 24-hour hospital is Hospital Comarcal Axarquia in Torre del Mar.

Schools

There are many small schools in the area; a trip to the Town Hall will let you know which catchment you’re in. Both Torre del Mar and Malaga offer a range of international education facilities.

Cost of Living

Benajarafe doesn’t have the broad range of prices of other resorts, as it’s considerably smaller. On the other hand, there are plentiful keenly priced and generously sized properties.
