Despite being bordered by only one other country (Spain), Portugal has an intercontinental feel. The culture, architecture, language and cuisine have all been influenced by centuries of global travel. Living standards are high due to the advanced economy, peaceful governance, and emphasis on moral freedom for its citizens. The weather is uniformly warm in the summer months, while temperatures in winter vary depending on location. For example, you’ll find snowfall in the mountains, mild microclimates by the coast and subtropical islands. But it’s the stunning variety of terrains that draws so many tourists and expats to the country. You can hike in the national parks, walk the cobbled streets of the historic villages, search the Atlantic horizon for glimpses of North America from dramatic cliffs or lounge on one of the many glittering beaches. The Portuguese have a hospitable nature and you can expect to eat freshly sourced ingredients cooked simply and served with a flourish. Fish, squid, smoked meats, olives, cheese, bread and local wines are plentiful and you’ll find produce markets and restaurants at every turn. Feasts are central features of many of the festivities but you’ll also find music, dancing and night-time revelries at the frequent celebrations throughout the year. The north of Portugal is rocky and rugged and famous for the port wine-growing region, the Douro Valley. Rising up from the rural interior are wild mountains dotted with hunks of granite and flowing from them, the wide, fertile Tagus, Guadiana and Douro rivers. Lisbon is the most densely populated city, closely followed by Porto, and the southern Algarve region is a tourist hotspot. The Madeira archipelago is made up of 8 volcanic peaks, only two of which are inhabited and there are 9 islands in the Azores offering pale beaches, thermal lakes, geysers and black lava fields. This land has been fought over by Celts, Goths, Greeks, Romans and Moors, each of whom have left their architectural marks. Modern property development tends towards spacious, open-plan homes with echoes of these historical styles. The people of Portugal revere a rural life and as a result, there are a lot of villas or plots of land for development available in the countryside. In contrast, the cities and coastal regions are filled with affordable apartments. The road networks are good, air travel is quick and easy from northern Europe and America and there are high-speed international trains from connecting cities in France and Spain. Children are legally required to be in education from six to eighteen years old and there is a range of schooling options for international students, from public state schools, private faith schools or international schools. There is a state healthcare system in Portugal too. EU citizens can access it for free once they’ve registered and received a healthcare number (cartão de utente).

Episode 82: Rolland, who purchased in Garrucha

&nbsp;Intro&nbsp;&nbsp;Welcome to the Kyero.com Spanish Property podcast, where we interview people who recently purchased their dream home in Spain.&nbsp;They tell us what worked, what didn’t and what they’d do differently next time.&nbsp;I’m Beth Davison and today I’m speaking with Rolland, from Middlesex, who purchased a villa in Garrucha, in Almería.&nbsp;His advice is to be honest and direct with your agent which seems to have worked out well with Spanish Property Expert who helped him find his dream home in Spain.&nbsp;Check out the show notes at <a href="http://kyero.com/podcast">kyero.com/podcast</a> to find links and resources mentioned in this episode.&nbsp;&nbsp;Body of Transcript&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; My name is Rolland and I live in the U.K. and I purchased a two bed flat in a place called Garrucha, in Almería, in Spain.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Did you know the area well?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Not really because this has all happened through Daniel. What I did was I actually looked on the internet and I registered myself with the Spanish property agents. Then Daniel started sending me some information and from there it all started.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; So, he sent you pictures, or he sent you more information than that? How did you first start looking?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; He actually sent me some... I told him my budget, how much I could spend, and within that budget he started sending me information on a few properties in the Almería area, saying that this is available for the budget I’m looking for. Then it ended up that, as we got further into it, I was so interested, as I looked at the places that were so beautiful that he was sending me. He said that the best thing for me to do was to come down there and then we can do this rather than from where I was in London.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, did you find it easier when you were there, in person, seeing things?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; I think yeah, because of the way it was organised. Straight away Daniel took full charge in the sense that he actually gave me a very beautiful hotel near to where the properties were that I wanted to view. He arranged to collect me from the airport.&nbsp;&nbsp;I’ll tell you what, I didn’t know; I was a bit scared – worried like, thinking that I’m going to a new place, I’ve never been there. When I met Daniel everything changed, everything changed when I met him as a person. It was completely as if I felt like I was home – his approach, the way he actually organised things, I thought I was home.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was such a beautiful journey, at the beginning, that I never found it other than very, very easy. I never had a problem what-so-ever, meeting Daniel and then his advice, I felt it was going to be a very, very easy way of buying something there, yes, definitely.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Amazing, it’s so good that you build these relationships with the agents and it all becomes about trust. Did he show you all the correct types of things? Was there anything that he showed you that you didn’t like?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; I’ll tell you what, the way it started was that we had shortlisted a few properties. The first one that he showed me, it was like the brochure and everything was good and he decided to take me to Roquetas de Mar, the place was called. It was quite near Almeria. As we were driving there and he said, “Until you see this property, don’t make any decisions or don't rush into things.” I was there for three days, so I had given him enough time so that we could see other properties as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I went there, the first one that he showed me was good, it was a new build and everything, but it wasn’t something that I liked. So, straight away I said to him, “Daniel, I don’t want to waste your time and neither do I want to waste my time as well, and what I’m looking for is something more along my choice. Can we go back?” That's exactly how I put it.&nbsp;So, we went back to the Mojácar area, and he said, “Rolland, I’ve got another couple of them you might like,” which he knows, so, that's how we came back and he showed his choices and I said, “Exactly! That’s what I’m looking for.” But, that wasn’t what my budget was. So, they were quite a bit over what I had planned. As I was looking at what he was showing me, and the way he approached it, he explained to me how things worked and the value of the properties.&nbsp;I tell you what, the third one that he showed me I sort of made my choice and I said, “Daniel, that’s what I'm going for.”&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh great, and was that within budget? Do you mind me asking how much your budget was?&nbsp;&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Within 50,000 to 60,000, that’s what I went for, but then I ended up going for somewhere between 75,000 and 80,000.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; OK, so a little bit over. What made that 15,000, 20,000 difference worthwhile?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Every time you see things on the internet and the brochures... I saw properties on the internet, from Daniel, but I actually looked at the whole area, what other agents were putting in ads also. Then what I found out about properties, like Daniel was showing, and the money required to buy] he was actually telling me the truth.&nbsp;One thing that I found about him, the more I was with him my confidence grew entirely because of Daniel because he doesn’t like to mess with something that is low quality. He doesn’t like to mess with something which has got strings attached. He’s a very straight forward guy. He’s a very sharp spoken guy if he likes something. He has his standards, and if you ask him something that is below his standards he looks at you as if you have asked him the wrong question. (laughter)&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, but I think that’s good because then you trust everything that he is showing you.&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Exactly, so, then from there, the ones that I saw had just come onto the market. I think I was the second or third guy to purchase property in that building. It was almost like a bank repossession, but it was a brand new building/property that was just finished in March of 2019 (I did a bit of a search history).&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And tell me about the property itself. So, you had seen it, it was the third one that you saw that day, what did it look like? What was it like when you walked in? How did you feel?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; I tell you what, when I walked into the building, it was a brand new building. It had a lift. It had a swimming pool. It had everything fully tiled. The sanitaries had all been fitted. The electrics weren't done, then plus, you had to put your own kitchen in and then you had to buy your own furniture. But that&nbsp; was the process.&nbsp;&nbsp;Daniel was giving me the comfort of saying, “You don’t have to worry about that, I’ll take care of it.” So, you know, I kept that in mind because I didn’t have anyone in Spain and for me to do that... You know, even if I buy a property, to have those things getting done [is an important detail].&nbsp;That was a little bit of a worry on my mind, but I told you what I had from Daniel, with all that is in this world, either you trust or you don’t trust; either you go ahead or you move back. In this situation, when I met Daniel and I found out how he was, personally, I thought it was worth taking a gamble and moving on. So, that’s how it all started, yes.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, so with a small bit of gamble. So, he was dealing with finishing off the electrics. Did he point you in the direction to buy furniture, to get it furnished? Did you do all of that with him?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yes, Daniel has got his contacts there, in Spain. Actually, the first thing was he asked me if I had a solicitor. The solicitor was named Angela Morales, and I would say they were as good as Daniel. Everything was so easy and they speak very good English, in that office, which is very helpful. I think between two or three phone calls and three or four emails everything got done that easily – they handled the paperwork; the notary; and they applied for the mortgage and everything went very smoothly.&nbsp;Regarding furniture, Daniel has his contacts, so I went to Daniel. So, I bought some furniture. Because of this Coronavirus I think everything is being held up now. Yeah, so he actually took me to a place where I could actually buy a kitchen, and then he sent me photographs to show that the kitchen was now fitted. It's all moving in the right direction.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Great, yeah, so that’s perfect. Have you actually bought property elsewhere? Did you buy property in London, or have you bought property in Goa?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yeah, I bought my own place in London and then I’ve got another one, holiday house nothing for business, but I've got a place in Wales as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Ah nice, so, how did you find the buying process compared to buying holiday home in Wales to buying a holiday home in Spain? How was it different or the same?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Because Daniel was there, I didn’t find any difference between over here and over there. Everything was guided through Daniel, so before I could do anything I would just want Daniel to say, “Hey, that’s correct.” If he said yes, then I could go ahead with it thinking that that was the way because however he guides you, that is exactly the way that Spain operates.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, and that’s amazing that it can be in a different country, you don’t get to see each other face to face, but actually you still feel very connected because of technology. He’s sending you photos now is he? So, you’ve not been over since the kitchen was fitted?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; He has been there and he has sent me the photographs of the kitchen. The way he’s been helping me is that whatever I have ordered he said to just send it to the address and he would help me by taking the deliveries of everything.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, that’s so helpful. That’s so useful.&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yeah, for me that is more than an agent to me, but the relationship has developed to where I feel like I’ve got another very, very close friend in Spain, yes.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And so, after lockdown passes and everything gets back to normal (fingers crossed) how will you be using the property? What’s the plan? Will family visit? Are you going to go there on holidays?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yes, I’ve got a boy and a girl. My son is the oldest one, seventeen, and then my daughter’s eleven. That was the plan that we have, we’ll be using the place for Easter holiday, though not right now as things need to change.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; But soon.&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yes, definitely, yeah, holiday house.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And what do your friends and other family, what do they think of you buying in Spain?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; I’ll tell you what, as I have been telling all of my other friends they’ve been saying, “Rolland, next time you go to Spain we’ll come along with you.”&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; (laughter) That’s good, that’s great. You can always take people.&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yes, definitely, definitely.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And what do you think your favourite part of Spanish life will be?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; I think the culture because we are Catholic as well, so, back home we come from a Roman Catholic background and we come from the sea coast as well. So, we love the homeliness, the kindness, the welcoming way that the Spanish people have and we come from the same kind of culture as well and it all matches.&nbsp;We are religious people as well. We like to go to church. We like to be in an area where there is more of a religious culture. So that’s why we chose Spain, yes.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; That is so interesting. No one has said that to me before. That’s really, really interesting. So, will you try and find a church that you feel comfortable with when you are there for holidays and things? Do you think you’ll practice in Spain?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; We have already browed churches and shortlisted some.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh great, that’s so good. They’re nearby then? You found lots of options?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yeah, they’re nearby. Yeah, in Mojácar there is one, Diego also has one but that is a small church there. If you go to Murcia there is one, and then Almería there is also one. So, yes, we've got a shortlist that we are going to visit.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; That’s great because I think that’s really important, if it’s something that you are looking for, that you find a congregation that you feel comfortable in, and that you find people that you connect with, and that’s going to be an important part of the research, then.&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Yes, definitely yes.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Did you tell your agent that? Did you tell Daniel that?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; Um, no, I didn’t get a chance to talk to him since he was busy as well. Due to the lockdown as well, there are so many things, so, we’re just keeping focused on making sure that he’s safe with his family, and he is making sure that we are safe, as well, in London.&nbsp;&nbsp;He keeps phoning and send photographs saying, "When will I come again?"&nbsp; I keep on telling him, “I’m not sure yet, I’m not sure yet.” We don't know because nothing is certain at the moment yet.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh, well, hopefully soon.&nbsp;&nbsp;My final question is always, if you were going to give advice to somebody thinking about doing the same thing is there one crucial piece of advice that you would pass on, or is there anything that you would do differently if you were going to do it all again?&nbsp;Rolland:&nbsp; I would say that the first thing that you need to do is find the right person. The properties might look good, everything might look very nice, but if you have the right person to guide you, and you have the right (I wouldn’t say agent but) person, and if that person is really, really honest and shows you what to expect, then there is no harm in actually going forward. You have got to be trusting people there, as well, because it’s not easy for them. The buyer (when they look at it) they think, when they go there, everything will be in place. But it’s like that everywhere. You have to have a little bit of tolerance for the person on the other side and how they are trying to fulfil your wishes or your dreams. So, it's your dream house, but then everybody else wants their dream house. So you really have to trust as well, yeah, yeah.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Trust, yeah.&nbsp;Well, fantastic. I’m so glad that your trust paid off and that it’s all going smoothly. I really hope that you and your kids can get out there really soon, I hope it’s really, really soon.&nbsp;Thank you so much for talking to me. It was nice to meet you, Rolland. Episode 80: Shaun, who purchased in Villaricos

&nbsp;Intro&nbsp;&nbsp;Welcome to the Kyero.com Spanish Property podcast, where we interview people who recently purchased their dream home in Spain.&nbsp;They tell us what worked, what didn’t and what they’d do differently next time.&nbsp;I’m Beth Davison and today I’m speaking with Shaun, from London, who purchased an apartment in Villaricos.&nbsp;Before retiring Shaun was formally the chairman and CEO of forty-seven companies, and has a total of five books published. So I'm really intrigued to find out which parts of his successful business mindset he found the most helpful when it came to buying property.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shaun worked with a state agent Spanish Property Expert to find his dream home in Spain.&nbsp;Check out the show notes at <a href="http://kyero.com/podcast">kyero.com/podcast</a> to find links and resources mentioned in this episode.&nbsp;&nbsp;Body of Transcript&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Hello my name is Shaun. I purchased an apartment in Villaricos which is run by Desert Springs, a few miles away. In fact it was after a rather long quest to find somewhere to live. I'd been meaning to buy somewhere overseas for about twenty years. My wife died eight years ago, so I sold my main house and I'm now living in a cottage.&nbsp;&nbsp;For the last five years I've been going to different places to try and find somewhere to live. First of all I went to the Moselle and I went to Florida, and then I went to Spain in Málaga, at Murcia, then I went to Algarve, and for various reasons I looked at properties in each of those places and decided they weren't suitable.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, finally I was looking at the television and there was a program called Place In The Sun, and on it the presenter was showing people around Málaga. So I thought, that's an interesting place, because I had heard that Almería was about the hottest part of Spain, and what I wanted particularly, not so much in the summer when it would be hot everywhere, but I wanted something that would be not too cold in the winter. What I wanted to do was to bathe in the sea, and I can bathe down to about fifteen degrees. That's possible.&nbsp;So anyway, what happened is after this program I though, I know, I'll go and spend a week there. So I rang two agents, one of whom was Daniel. I won't tell you the other one, and I booked to spend a day with each of the agents looking for three or four properties in Málaga. Well, I did, I went down for a week. I said to myself, "If I want to buy something I'll buy, within a week. I'll make up my mind and that's that."&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I saw on the Monday, I saw three places with the first agent, and I didn't like any of those. There's nothing wrong with them, but it just didn't suit me. I found Málaga a bit suburban and not a town with a proper centre. And the next day I met Daniel who turned up bang on time at my hotel and we saw three places in Málaga. Well, I didn't like any of those either. I mean I didn't dislike them, but I didn't think they were entirely suitable. I thought about them, and I said, "Now, what about somewhere outside Málaga?" He said, "I know what, we'll drive up going North up the coast going to Villaricos." He said, "I know a couple of apartments still available in one of the Desert Springs buildings." And we drove up there, I looked at the first one which was on the ground floor, and I thought, this is rather nice. I'd like one a bit higher with a balcony, and went upstairs and thought well this is about right!&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Amazing! So you just knew.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; I said to Daniel, "I'll tell you what, I'll think about it overnight, I've seen now six or seven properties, and I'll tell you in the morning." So, why don't we meet first thing in the morning and I'll give you the answer. Well sure enough, he turned up again on time, and I said, "Yes, I've chosen the one. That first floor apartment in Villaricos. What do we do now?"&nbsp;&nbsp;So he said, well, I'll tell you what, we'll drive straight up to the offices of Desert Springs, which is a few miles away." When I went there both of the people there spoke English. So, it was not too difficult for me, and I had a credit card with me. So I said, what shall I do to book it? They said, well, put a deposit down. I got on my mobile and gave them the deposit. I think it was ten thousand Euros and that was that.&nbsp;&nbsp;Obviously, I needed to have a proper look at the place again. So I went down with a lovely lady called Natalia, and we looked over the apartment, and she had a book showing all the sort of patterns that you needed for cupboards and what we needed. So I ordered cupboards, central heating, different types of cookers, washing machine, and that sort of stuff.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; As in, you did it then and there with Natalia?&nbsp;Shaun: &nbsp; I did it then and there.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh wow, you sound like a decision making pro. This would take people months.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; I know. I haven't always been decisive, but it served me well in business and I've done very well, so I can't complain and I've always been... People use to say I was firm but fair but very decisive. So, there we are.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah. Well I actually, I wanted to mention your business background, because am I right in saying you were the CEO of forty-seven companies?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; I've been the CEO of dozens of companies because I was what was called at the time, a company doctor, and I would be recruited to go in and sort out businesses which were failing or needed changing.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Right, but, so you mentioned, obviously, your ability to make decisions has been honed over many years of business. Is there anything else that you feel like you applied to the property search, to the property negotiations perhaps, that was a business mind set?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; No, I mean it was all very straight forward. Daniel sorted it out very well.He told me what to do and I did it. So...&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; It was as easy as that!&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; And the problem was, of course, I did not realise that when you buy a new property, you have to have a license for first occupation. I rang up Natalia about every month about the license, with the local town hall, took four and a half months to come through. They had to go see it and check it and whatever they do. But I didn't ask what they needed to do. I just wanted the licence because by the time the license came through, you were in lock down.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Lock down had happened, yeah.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; And lockdown, apparently, was pretty awful in Spain. Daniel said he was locked up in his house for about forty days or something.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, it was. It was stricter than in the UK certainly. Are you in London? Am I right in saying?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; No, no, I'm out in the country.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh, okay. But you're in the UK?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Ah yes, I live about thirty-eight miles from London.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh okay. So you were out there when you purchased it, and you made all of the decisions about the interior design, but you've not been out there since to see how it all looks now?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; No, no. All I was able to do was to book some furniture, which was done... my son did it. He's better at that than I am. I chose it in England, and the branch in Madrid, we emailed them and I paid by credit card, and they delivered it to the place, and Natalia found the firm to come and put all the bits together. It was one of those companies that supplied them in assembly form.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, and they'll move you in so it will all be there, and it's all set up for you.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Yes, but it's only the main stuff like tables, chairs, settees and so on. All the rest of it I've got to find. As soon as I get out there I'm going to ask Daniel, who's very helpful, where to go to get it. Maybe he'll even take me to somewhere where I can get all the rest of the stuff I need. You know, you need furnishings and bed linens and kitchen stuff and so on.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh totally, yeah.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; And I mean, now of course, with my wife having died, I mean I'm on my own because I'm also getting quite old. I'm nearly eighty-nine, so, people would say that I've lived a bit late to make the move.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; No! You'll get out there and you'll enjoy it so much once you're there. You'll enjoy it for years.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Well I would hope to live longer.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Exactly! Exactly! So what is your plan for the future? When you can make it there and make all of these final decisions, how do you think you'll use the property? Are you going to live there full-time or are you going to come back and forth?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; No, no, definitely not, no. I'll probably go for a month at a time.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, lovely.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Mainly in the winter, because I don't like the winters here much.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, it'll be so much warmer there.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; But my children will go out in the summer. So it will be an ideal arrangement.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And have you got grandkids and stuff that will be using it?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Oh yes, definitely. I've got four grandchildren. The youngest is only six months old. So there's a big gap between my age and theirs.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah! How many years is that? Eighty-eight and a half?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Eighty-eight and a half!&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; But it'll be fantastic! So they'll get to use it as a holiday home. You'll go and spend sort of long periods of time there in the winter just to get a nicer injection of sun. And do you think the swimming you mentioned and the getting into the water, is that going to happen in winter? What's the temperature like over there?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Well, I'm told the water doesn't get much below fifteen at that particular place.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, lovely.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; And I can swim in fifteen, because I still row. I'm still a member of the local rowing club, so I row and swim.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Are you the oldest member at the rowing club? Is there anyone else in their late eighties who's still rowing?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; No, no.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; How amazing! I think it sounds great! I think your whole lifestyle sounds brilliant.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; There we are. I'm lucky you see.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah! So, and you've travelled the world. You travelled the world with her, and through business presumably you've travelled a lot. So what is it about Spain, do you think, that's really captured your heart? Of all the places that you looked at, and you said at the beginning how many different countries that was, what was it about Spain that drew you in?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Well I've always loved the Spanish. I love the environment: the villages more than the towns. I like to be sort of slightly, slightly cut off in a small environment. And I love the food, you know I'm a sort of a top paella cook myself, and you know the sunshine, the sea, the food, the comradery. I've got some Spanish, and I've written seven books as well as my business career, Five of which have been published, and one of them was on four languages: three romance languages, Italian, Spanish, and also I included German.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh okay, yeah.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; So I wrote this book called, Talk Your Way Around Europe, which is still being sold. You know, when I fly over to a place I sort of mug up as best I can. One of the parts of the book is a five-hundred word vocabulary, and different vocabularies for business and for buying food and eating out, which are the main things you need, and I try and sort of remember some of the vocabulary. So, I can sort of read some of the newspaper, but that's about as good.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; But it's nice to just try and to just show an effort to speak to people in their native language.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Well, when I go over there, one of my objectives is to become much better speaking. And I thought, if I'm staying there for months at a time I've damn well got to learn the language to speak it. Even if I found it hard to pick up.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, and I think you will though. I think being surrounded by it and being there for longer periods of time it's different than a short holiday. You'll pick it up more. What was your book called did you say? Talk Yourself Around Europe?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; No, Talk Your Way Around Europe.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Talk Your Way Around Europe, well fantastic, I will keep an eye out for it. My final question, which I ask everyone, is if you were going to give some advice to someone thinking about purchasing in Spain, or at the age of eighty-eight, if you were just going to give some life advice, I'm quite interested, what would you say to people?&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; I'd say first of all, get on with it. Don't hang around like I have for years, and be decisive. Decide, roughly, what type of place you want in advance. If finance is a problem then you've got to set a budget, but in my case I didn't need to because I can pay whatever the price was. But I knew that I wanted somewhere which had three bedrooms so my children could stay, and my grandchildren, and possibly I might go over there and stay with them. You know, either one or the other of my children and grandchildren.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, and just having those options. Giving yourself that kind of possibility.&nbsp;Shaun:&nbsp; Yeah.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Fantastic! Well thank you Shaun, so much for chatting to me today! &nbsp;Intro&nbsp;&nbsp;Welcome to the Kyero.com Spanish Property podcast, where we interview people who recently purchased their dream home in Spain.&nbsp;They tell us what worked, what didn’t and what they’d do differently next time.&nbsp;I’m Beth Davison and today I’m speaking with Henri, From Holland, who purchased an apartments in Palomares, in the Almeria region.&nbsp;To give you some context, this was recorded at the beginning of lockdown. Henri had owned the property for a year and was waiting to move permanently to get back to his beautiful balcony.&nbsp;He worked with estate agent Spanish Property Experts to find his dream home in Spain.&nbsp;Check out the show notes at <a href="http://kyero.com/podcast">kyero.com/podcast</a> to find links and resources mentioned in this episode.&nbsp;&nbsp;Body of Transcript&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; My name is Henri. I bought an apartment in Spain in Almeria, in the small village of Palomares.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Fantastic, when did that complete? When did you first get the keys?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; I received the keys on March 27th of last year.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; So, that's 2019, so you've had it just over a year?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, correct.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; How did you find the process?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; The process... Well we just started searching the internet looking for a house early last year and we found Spanish Property Experts which had some properties that we were interested in. So, we contacted Daniel Marin and he guided us through the process of finding something.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Had you ever bought in Spain before? Or was this the first time that you were looking in Spain?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; No, we hadn't bought anything abroad yet. We had been looking in Italy for a while and in France. But we couldn't really find anything. So, coincidentally, we were in Spain and we were pleasantly surprised. So, that's when we thought of buying something in Spain, or looking around for something in Spain.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, totally, and what were you looking for? What was on your list of things that you definitely wanted?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, what we wanted was an apartment enclosed, preferably, and then with space outside. So, it needed to have absolutely a balcony and, if possible, some more space.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Did you know how many bedrooms and exactly how you wanted to use it? Was it for holidays?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, we wanted to use it for ourselves, initially, and then rent it out occasionally to cover some of the cost, initially, and then over a period of time go to Spain to live there ourselves. So, the most important thing for us was a minimum of two bedrooms.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah. For the permanent [part], you're thinking that eventually you'd like to live permanently in Spain?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, that was the idea until this thing with CORONA happened.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, that put the plans on hold, slightly, for a few months.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yeah, exactly, so, basically we had our house on the market since the end of February this year.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And this is your house in Holland?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; In Holland, yes. Our plan was that as soon as the house was sold we would move to Spain.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh, wow, so, actually, right now you're just waiting?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; We are just waiting and, hopefully, in the very near future, we can sell and move to Spain.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; That's an amazing move. Do you think, will life be very different in Spain, to what you have in Holland?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, it is absolutely very, very different. First thing that is most important is the weather.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; But life, itself, is far more, I don't know, relaxed is maybe not the right world, but it's more appealing to us. It's not so much as sitting in a rolling train as in Holland.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, and will you have to get different jobs or retire or what are you thinking about work when you're in Spain?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, I'm 58 so I cannot retire quite yet. We've been looking around for work and we are pretty confident that we can find something to do, both my wife and myself, enough at least to cover the cost of living there.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, that will be great. Do you speak Spanish?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; No, I'm in the process of learning; slowly, slowly learning. That will come.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, amazing, it's very brave to move and you'll move jobs and you don't speak the language and you'll start just from fresh.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, for us it's quite an adventure but we are very positive and looking forward to it.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah. What do your friends and family think? Do people do this often in Holland?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, my family, my kids, friends, relatives, everybody is very, very positive.&nbsp;&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And they'll have somewhere to come and visit.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, they'll come and visit. We have been there twice ourselves, last year. Two of my sons, with their friends, have been to Palomares. I don't know if you know the festival Dream beach?&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; I've heard of it. I've never been but I've heard of it.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, it's a huge festival and all the popular artists that my kids know were there. So, they've been to Palomares in August.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh, perfect, is it a music festival, yea?&nbsp;&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, yes.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Well, that's a good use of the house. So, they go and have holidays there and then you would go probably not for the music festival?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; No, no, (laughter).&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; So, when you're there what type of things do you do? What does a traditional holiday in Spain or day in Spain like for you?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; The times that we've been there we were really tired of working so we didn't do an awful lot. We just... It's a beautiful area; it's very close to the coast; it's close to the mountains; it's close to everything. So, you're just a short drive away from everything you really want to see.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; What's your favourite thing to do there? Are you outdoors people, or chill by the pool? What's your ideal?&nbsp;Fortunately, there is a pool there, at the apartment, but I haven't used it yet. I like much more just to go out in the mountains or the forests.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Activities.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, yes.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; And is your wife the same? Do you like the same things when you go?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yes, absolutely. We're, like I say, hard working, so we use the time to rest as well.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, totally.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; When we do relax we just go out, like I said, in the mountains or just drive up and see what we can find in the inland.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, exploring. Did your agent know all of this when you first met him and said what you enjoyed doing and what you were looking for? Did he show you a lot of different places that offered the same thing? Or did you just view this property that you bought?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; No, the first time that we went there we looked south of Sierra Nevada. We didn't want to go to the tourist areas in Malaga, Torremolinos, so, that was the area where we were before. So, we wanted to get away from there.&nbsp;&nbsp;South of Sierra Nevada we found some properties that were within our budget. They were places like Illar, Cochena, Alcolea. That's where Danny took us because that's what we requested.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then we'd been there for two days, looking around. Danny showed us everything that we wanted to see and he probably saw that we were not very enthusiastic. All those places, the prices are right, but the area was not right.&nbsp;So, on the third day Danny suggested to show us some places that he thought we might be interested in. So, on day three we arrived in Palomares and I looked at my wife, she looked at me, and we thought, "Well, this is it."&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Oh, good. So, that's a good feeling when you both know and you're both in agreement.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yeah, well, luckily we had Danny and he took excellent care of us and he brought us exactly where we wanted to be. So, we found a place in Palomares. On that day there was something for sale, but then it wasn't 100% what we wanted. Danny said to us, "Just hang on, don't jump into anything. Think it over and then I will look around.&nbsp; Within a week or two weeks I will probably find something that is exactly for you."&nbsp;&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Was he right? Was it just a few weeks?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; No, it was not. We left the next day to go back to Holland and when we were in the airport he called me already.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Wow, that’s funny.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; So, yeah, it was really the next day that he said, “I think I’ve got something.” So, he sent us the pictures and on the way home we looked it all over and discussed it. When I got home I just booked return tickets for the next week.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; To go back and see it in person.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; To go back and see it and Danny was exactly right. It was exactly 100%. All the boxes were ticked for what we wanted. So, basically that’s when we decided to make an offer and two weeks later we signed a contract.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Amazing, that’s so good. It had the balcony? It had everything that you were looking for?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; It had the balcony and it had the hard size of the apartment and the roof terrace. So, that was perfect for us.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Yeah, lovely. From the U.K. a lot of people say how good the value is in Spain, and what you get for your money is so much bigger than what you can get in the U.K. for your money. Is that the same for Holland? What is the value like on houses, in comparison, between Spain and Holland?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Well, it’s relatively a tourist area. So, I think, in Holland, I could not get it for double the price.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Wow, interesting, it is, again, a value for money in Spain.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Oh, absolutely, absolutely. It’s not directly on the coast but we can see the coastline. It’s about a ten or fifteen minute walk to the sea. So, if you look at that, the location is perfect. I couldn’t afford something like that in Holland or anywhere here, even in France. It’s far more expensive.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Wow, I’m so glad you found the right property. My final question to everybody is, if you were going to give advice to someone thinking about doing the same thing, what piece of advice would you give? Is there anything that you would do differently if you were going to do it all over again?&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; I was not familiar with Spain. So, I was really a little bit scared of how all the procedures would go. So, my advice would be, if you are anywhere interested just go there and have a look around and let (like Danny did for us), the estate agent, let them advise you. From there on, if you make the decision, it’s very easy and simple. The process is not scary at all. It’s all very straightforward. Don’t be scared, go and follow your heart.&nbsp;Beth:&nbsp; Great advice. I really hope that you guys, soon, can follow your heart and move there permanently. In just a few more months, I’m sure, and then everything is going to get started again and I really hope that move goes well.&nbsp;Henri:&nbsp; Yeah, thank you, Beth.
