Despite being bordered by only one other country (Spain), Portugal has an intercontinental feel. The culture, architecture, language and cuisine have all been influenced by centuries of global travel. Living standards are high due to the advanced economy, peaceful governance, and emphasis on moral freedom for its citizens. The weather is uniformly warm in the summer months, while temperatures in winter vary depending on location. For example, you’ll find snowfall in the mountains, mild microclimates by the coast and subtropical islands. But it’s the stunning variety of terrains that draws so many tourists and expats to the country. You can hike in the national parks, walk the cobbled streets of the historic villages, search the Atlantic horizon for glimpses of North America from dramatic cliffs or lounge on one of the many glittering beaches. The Portuguese have a hospitable nature and you can expect to eat freshly sourced ingredients cooked simply and served with a flourish. Fish, squid, smoked meats, olives, cheese, bread and local wines are plentiful and you’ll find produce markets and restaurants at every turn. Feasts are central features of many of the festivities but you’ll also find music, dancing and night-time revelries at the frequent celebrations throughout the year. The north of Portugal is rocky and rugged and famous for the port wine-growing region, the Douro Valley. Rising up from the rural interior are wild mountains dotted with hunks of granite and flowing from them, the wide, fertile Tagus, Guadiana and Douro rivers. Lisbon is the most densely populated city, closely followed by Porto, and the southern Algarve region is a tourist hotspot. The Madeira archipelago is made up of 8 volcanic peaks, only two of which are inhabited and there are 9 islands in the Azores offering pale beaches, thermal lakes, geysers and black lava fields. This land has been fought over by Celts, Goths, Greeks, Romans and Moors, each of whom have left their architectural marks. Modern property development tends towards spacious, open-plan homes with echoes of these historical styles. The people of Portugal revere a rural life and as a result, there are a lot of villas or plots of land for development available in the countryside. In contrast, the cities and coastal regions are filled with affordable apartments. The road networks are good, air travel is quick and easy from northern Europe and America and there are high-speed international trains from connecting cities in France and Spain. Children are legally required to be in education from six to eighteen years old and there is a range of schooling options for international students, from public state schools, private faith schools or international schools. There is a state healthcare system in Portugal too. EU citizens can access it for free once they’ve registered and received a healthcare number (cartão de utente).

&nbsp;<h2>Intro</h2>Welcome to the Kyero.com Spanish Property podcast where we interview people who recently purchased a home in Spain.They tell us what worked, what didn’t and what they’d do differently next time.I’m Beth Davison and today I’m speaking with Olle, from Sweden, who purchased a house in<a href="https://www.kyero.com/en/oliva-property-for-sale-0l53477"> Oliva, Valencia</a>Olle not only wanted his perfect village location but was also looking to do some renovation on the house himself, as a&nbsp;break from work, and to add space for family and friends to visit.He worked with estate agent <a href="https://www.kyero.com/en/spain-property-for-sale-0l55529?agent_id=4717">Oliva Casas</a> to find his dream home in Spain. &nbsp;Check out the show notes at <a href="http://kyero.com/podcast">kyero.com/podcast</a> to find links and resources mentioned in this episode<h2>Body of Transcript</h2>Olle: &nbsp;My name is Olle and I’m from Stockholm, Sweden and I’m a writer. My wife and I bought a house in Oliva, in the south of Valencia, north of Alicante (between). It’s a village house.Beth: &nbsp;So, how did it all start for you? When did you first start having these conversations?Olle: &nbsp;My wife is an editor and translator, so we have talked about having a holiday/work place in the sun for a long time. We have been freelancers for many years. We started with France, and looked in France, because she’s translating from French and English, but it was too cold in France.We went more south, and more south, and this last year we started to think that maybe we should take up Spain again. We had been here five or six years ago when we were traveling this coastline and we talked about it. Then I started write down what we wanted, like what we couldn’t afford with our budget and so on, and how far it is to the airport it was, and things like that. Then I started to look at the different villages down here on this coastline. Then, all of sudden, I found this little place called Oliva.It’s amazing because it’s everything that I had written down. Everything was so great.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, perfect. So, what did you have written down? What were the most important factors?Olle: &nbsp;One thing that is very important is that an airport be rather close – one hour from an airport. We are from Stockholm, Sweden and it’s a four hour flight, and you need to have different companies fly to that airport. Alicante is a marvelous airport. It’s brilliant. They really know how to take care of you.That was one thing, and another thing was that, in many of these countries there are highways rather close to the sea, to the beach, and to be on the right side of the highway (if you can understand), so that you can bicycle down to the sea.Beth: &nbsp;Oh, nice idea. OK, were you flying with your bike?Olle: &nbsp;No, I wasn’t flying with my bike. It was just that feeling of going on a bike and rolling down to the sea and not have to cross big roads and things like that.Beth: &nbsp;Yes, fair enough. Did you know your budget and how many bedrooms you wanted and things like that?Olle: &nbsp;Yes, yes, we knew our budget and we had a quite strict budget. So, I am very interested in renovation and renovating, myself. It’s a good thing when you are a writer to rise up from your chair, sometimes, and do some real work.Beth: &nbsp;Yes, definitely.Olle: &nbsp;So, therefore, I wanted to find something that we could make for ourselves.Beth: &nbsp;So, were you doing most of your research on the internet in Stockholm, or did you travel a lot to Spain? How did it work?Olle: &nbsp;We did, really, everything on the internet. You can walk in every village with the Google Maps.Have I been traveling? I’ve been to Majorca many times. I’ve been here on this coastline many times before, so I’m quite familiar with many things. So when I walk in, with this Google Maps, you can feel how this reminds me of that. So, there are many things that you can discover on the internet.Beth: &nbsp;How useful was your agent? At what point did your agent start getting involved in the process?Olle: &nbsp;My agent, in one way they are a main part. When I came here, to Oliva, I had seen this particular house, actually, on the internet. Then I contacted Oliva Casas, this agent, and they were brilliant. They immediately understood what I wanted and they understood my budget and so on.When I came here, in November of last year, for my first time in Oliva, they really took care of me and they showed me a lot of houses. You could see that they understood everything that I wanted. They were not pushy but they made everything happen. So, they were absolutely brilliant.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic. The location that you’re in, tell me a little bit more about the surrounding area and the house itself.Olle: &nbsp;The house itself, it’s a village house. It’s quite interesting. It’s three meters wide and it’s nineteen meters long, so it’s small. Village houses here in Spain, many times there are windows on the street, on the wall to the street and there’s a patio in the middle with an oaken roof. So, it can be quite dark. This house has a little garden on the other side, on the outside so I can walk nineteen meters and I can come out to a garden. From that garden I have a fantastic, beautiful view over Oliva, over the little Pueblo, and then the Mediterranean.Beth: &nbsp;Beautiful. Outside of your grounds, what is the area like?Olle: &nbsp;We are a little bit in the outside of town, up on the hill, but we are still inside on one of the last streets. It’s a very Spanish village. We wanted a very Spanish village, so on the street I think there are one or two English people and maybe some French, but then there are Romanians and there are Spanish and more people from all different countries, so it’s a wonderful atmosphere – very friendly.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, it sounds very different to Stockholm. So, how do you split your time? Is it a holiday home for you?Olle: &nbsp;Holiday of course, but also we go down here and work. We’ll go down here and work for two weeks, or write. I take my work with me, and my wife, also is able to take her work and we go down here and make the house a place to work in, also, so, not only a holiday home.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, it sounds lovely. What kind of writing do you do?Olle: &nbsp;I wrote a novel last year and I’m working on another one, now. I also have written some non-fiction books.Beth: &nbsp;Do you find that the Spanish atmosphere helps with that, helps with your creativity?Olle: &nbsp;Yeah, absolutely. I always adored Spain. They are extremely friendly. They still say hello to each other on the street when you meet someone, even if you don’t know them. There is always this, where you say goodbye, when you leave someone at the grocery store, and when you see others in the line. It’s very friendly.Beth: &nbsp;Is it friendlier than Stockholm?Olle: &nbsp;Absolutely, absolutelyBeth: &nbsp;Interesting, interesting.I wanted to just talk about the process a little bit more. When you bought your house, how much renovating needed to happen?Olle: &nbsp;There is new electricity, and I had to look at all the water and pipes and so on. I’m building two small bathrooms. I have one bathroom, but we have two children. They are in the process of getting married and having children themselves and so on. Hopefully they will come down here and so I wanted them to have a room and a bathroom.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, fantastic. How did you get help for things like this renovation stuff? Where did you go to buy all of your stuff? Who gave you the advice on that?Olle: &nbsp;The advice I got from Oliva Casa, from Jane, who I bought the house with. Then, I have renovated two or three houses in Stockholm or Sweden, so I’m quite used to the process of how to start and so on. There are companies close by in Gandia, our closest city. It’s quite a big city and they have all the companies and whatever you need.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic. How is your Spanish? Did you find that there was a language barrier when you were doing things like that, or are you quite good?Olle: &nbsp;No, not at all. I read Spanish in school, but it was thirty-five years ago, but I want to learn and I want to know. You have some words and you just try to use them.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, exactly. So, which part have you found the most challenging of the whole process?Olle: &nbsp;Not really anything.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, it sounds like you had a very easy time of it.Olle: &nbsp;I came here in November and I looked at six houses and this house was one of them. Jane (the broker) and I understood that this was the house for us. Then a couple of weeks later I brought Patricia, my wife, down here. We looked at two houses and she also found out that this house the place for us. Then we just made an offer. It was quite simple.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, and the rest is history.If you were going to give advice to people doing the same thing as you, or just starting the buying process, what advice would you give them?Olle: &nbsp;write down everything. If you’re a golf player, write down how long it should be to the golf course. Do you want to live at the golf course, like other people do? I play golf myself, but I don’t want to live by a golf course because it’s not the Spanish village. Consider things like that. Write out everything that you want because there are so many villages and there are so many beautiful places in Spain. So, you can nearly really find everything you’re looking for.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic. You were doing it uniquely from other people that I have spoken to and who are British. You’re not closer, because the flight times are similar. Did you find that there are any similarities to buying property in Sweden?Olle: &nbsp;We had a very good lawyer, here. That’s good advice – to get the service of a good lawyer that you can speak to in your language – in a language so that you can understand things. So, I think the legal process is much more genuine, in one way, here. I felt more secure here. There was a lawyer and I could rely on him.When we bought the house they saw that, on the town drawings that the house was too small. So, that was the lawyer that discovered that. So, they had to just make the new drawings of the townhouse before we could sign the papers. It took two or three weeks to do that, but that was for our sake.It was things like that, where no one had seen something like that before. So, a good lawyer is very good. He has done everything, the lawyer. He even gave us our NIE numbers, that are not difficult to get, but he did everything. He had the process and he’s a famous guy, probably, in this little village. Oliva is about twenty-five thousand people living here. I don’t know how many are here year round, but this guy, the lawyer, is probably a well known guy here. That’s also creates trust in people.Beth: &nbsp;My last question is about your kind of lifestyle, when you visit Spain, and what your favourite part of Spanish life is?Olle: &nbsp;If you compare it to coming from a cold country, like at home, because it’s so cold throughout. The feeling here is that they need each other in many ways. So there are a lot of tapas bars. There is a very friendly atmosphere between all people, even older people.You can see men in their sixties really talking to each other with an atmosphere of connection that you don’t see in other countries. I think that is probably a climate thing. They have these tapas bars. They really want to meet each other. That’s a very nice feeling, I think.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic, that’s perfect. Thank you, Olle. As far as what I do for a living, I don’t do anything now because I’m retired.Beth: &nbsp;Lovely, so this for you was a kind of retirement plan?Tom: &nbsp;Yeah, my wife and I decided, after we both finally retired for the second or third time, to come to Spain, to move here and we’re extremely happy.Beth: &nbsp;I’ve obviously been talking to mainly British buyers throughout this process, but is it quite common for American people to relocate permanently to Spain? Have you met any other Americans who have done what you have done?Tom: &nbsp;There are very few Americans, or even American accents here.Beth: &nbsp;That’s what I thought.Tom: &nbsp;Americans, they will move, for instance, to a lower cost area like Arizona, or the Midwest, or something like that, if they’ve lived in a place where they can capitalize on the sale of their house.That happens a lot in California, where I’m from, because the value of the houses has gone up tremendously in California if not in other parts of the States. But, we really didn’t want to move to another state. We fell in love with Spain when we were on holiday, so here we are.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, lovely, so obviously you’d holidayed in Spain. How well did you know it before you started looking at moving there permanently?Tom: &nbsp;Only for what we had read and researched. Prior to that our only trip to Europe had been to Paris and that was about twenty years ago.Beth: &nbsp;Wow, so what was it about Spain that so appealed?Tom: &nbsp;My wife is of Spanish ancestry and she did a lot of investigation in ancestry.com to see about where her family came from. So, that was a very big link. We were fortunate enough, on our vacation, to visit the churches and cathedrals where her ancestors, going back to the 1700s, I think, had been born and married and things. It was quite exciting.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, it sounds it. Did you know the specific area you were looking for, or when you first started your initial search was the net cast very wide?Tom: &nbsp;Good question. When we came here we visited almost every part of Spain except the Basque area. So, we got a really good feel for the various locations and when we came to Malaga we just fell in love with that area.My wife’s from Puerto Rico and I used to live there, so it was very much like Puerto Rico. It just felt like home. So, we tended to want to live in the southern part of Spain, as opposed to Madrid or up in the northern part.So, we just started investigating and, I have to be honest, Carol was a big influence in understanding this area. We first started looking in the Costa del Sol area, honestly, online. But in reading more about it we found ourselves wanting to be more in the Costa Tropical area because it had more rain, different types of vegetation, and fewer tourists.So, the search lead us to the Almunecar and Salobrena area.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, lovely. Presumably, for people that I’ve been speaking to for this podcast series, they’re nipping across the viewings because the flight is only a few hours. Maybe they’ll try and put it all in one trip, or whatever. But, for you, we’re talking six thousand miles from where you were. So how did you do viewings and stuff?Tom: &nbsp;Ah, we were fortunate enough to start communications with Tropicana Properties, with a realtor named Martin, who since left and moved to France, but Jose was the guy who picked up the ball. We had an email correspondence going back and forth for quite some time.We would see things on Kyero and then talk to him via email. So, when we arrived here we had a really focused house search in just the Almunecar and Salobrena area. Frankly, once we saw the Almunecar area that’s all we wanted. Salobrena was out.So, Jose did an incredible job of finding what we wanted because we had made pretty clear what our requirements were. He surpassed that. The place that we bought is beyond what we had expected and for an extremely reasonable price.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, so let’s talk about the specific place, in the end. What was the viewing process like? Did you walk in and know immediately that it was the place that you were going to have?Tom: &nbsp;Yes, we had spent a long day looking at properties and I think this was the third day… no this was the second day of viewings and then we went out a third day. But, on the second day we saw this place. It was at the end of a very long day.It was similar to the reaction when we bought our house in California, forty years ago. We walked in and just knew. It’s one of those feelings that, I’m quite sure, your other customers have.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah.Tom: &nbsp;So, when we saw this, and we saw the price, and we kept the next day and saw the other properties and just said, “This is what we want.”We worked out an offer. It was accepted, and then we just bought it.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, lovely. So, what was it about the house, then, that gave you that great feeling of just knowing?Tom: &nbsp;Location. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Almunecar area but it’s right on the ocean. All of the housing, because it’s so mountainous, the houses are literally on the sides of mountains. The roads are mountain roads. They’re pretty narrow and twisty and sort of dangerous. So that was not a good thing for a lot of the places that we saw.This one is closer to the Marina and has a better access. So, that was a big thing. The other was how the house is laid out. Again, with houses on the side of the mountain you have a lot of stairs. Some of the stairs are really steep. This house has three floors, so they didn’t try to jam everything into two floors and make steep stairs. They spread it out over three floors and the stairs are more gradual.Beth: &nbsp;Right, nice.Tom: &nbsp;For our knees, believe me that was welcomed. (Laughter)Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, very good.Tom: &nbsp;Then, it’s just a beautiful house with marble floors and we have two terraces and a balcony and view that people would kill to have. It’s just incredibly beautiful. The back of the house faces due east, so we get the sunrise. The community, here, is a very nice community. You get the feeling that it’s a nice, safe place. All the people that we’ve talked with have confirmed that.Beth: &nbsp;Lovely, so it seems like the right decisions were made, which is great considering so much of it was done via email to start with. You’re one of the few people, that I’ve spoken to, who are outside of Europe buying. Did you find that a challenge having to learn different European laws and things like that, or was it very similar to the buying process in the US?Tom: &nbsp;It’s fairly similar. The thing that Jose contributed was to keep us from being way too enthusiastic about houses that we would see in pictures and say, “Oh, we want to buy this one.” He would say, “No, just hold on and wait to get here. You are giving me an idea of what you want.” So, he was able to put together a nice itinerary.The buying process, itself, was very similar. The one big difference was (it was an expensive difference) that in Spain there is a tax that the buyer pays and it’s like a sales tax. That we did not know about until the last moment. So, that was a chunk of change that we had not expected. Thank heavens that we had enough set aside to be able to cover it.Other than that, the relationship between the customer and the realtor and then the attorneys it was all quite similar.Beth: &nbsp;Presumably, with things like that additional tax you had budgeted for that? How did you work out your budget?Tom: &nbsp;Well, we sold our house in California and we paid off all of our debts and had a fair amount of money left over. Then we knew that we still wanted to have something left in the bank after we bought so, we subtracted that and what was left over was our budget.So, we looked at houses within a variety of price ranges and found that, within the budget that we had established, there were a ton of houses that met our criteria. So, it wasn’t necessary to go to a higher price range to get what we were looking for. We were quite fortunate in that regard.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, fantastic. Do you mind me asking what your budget was?Tom: &nbsp;We were looking at between two hundred and three hundred Euros or two hundred and three hundred thousand.Beth: &nbsp;That’s a big span. That’s a hundred grand difference. So, you can find a lot, I’m presuming, of different sized and different amount of bedrooms and that kind of thing.Tom: &nbsp;Yes, it sounds like a big span, but, it really isn’t when you start comparing what the different price ranges offer. As you get closer to three hundred thousand the amenities, the size of the house, the location, are not that different from the mid and lower two hundreds.Beth: &nbsp;Interesting.Tom: &nbsp;Yeah, so, we figured we could probably find something in the mid two hundreds. In fact, the asking price was two hundred and fifty. So that’s about as midpoint as you can get. We offered two hundred and forty, which he accepted.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic.Tom: &nbsp;Yeah, so that, budget wise, fit very nicely.Beth: &nbsp;Then the tax that you were talking about - the (not hidden costs) costs that you hadn’t initially thought of and put into your budget, what percentage of the house costs, would you say, that comes to?Tom: &nbsp;That was eight per cent.Beth: &nbsp;OK, fair enough. So, it is going to be a decent chunk if that wasn’t one that you had already thought of.Tom: &nbsp;Yeah, yeah, it wasn’t something until we learned of it at the end of the process. I’m quite sure that they probably told us, but it just did not register because it’s strange for us – a tax in that way. We have bought many properties in the States, because we used to have properties for rent.Beth: &nbsp;It is slightly different. I can totally see how that accidentally caught you out.My last question is about your lifestyle in Spain because it must be so different to the US and what your favourite parts of that are.Tom: &nbsp;My lifestyle right now has been as hectic as in the United States because…Beth: &nbsp;Oh no.Tom: &nbsp;Well, we’ve only been here for less than two months. Of course, our shipment of goods has not arrived yet so, we have been getting some basic furniture, getting a car, and getting a driver's licence.We’ve been on the go since we got here. Thank heavens that the area where we live is very accommodating. We are about ten minutes from town and the town is wonderful. The people are wonderful. We have not been able to take long strolls on the beach like we would like to.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, of course.Tom: &nbsp;One of these days when we get settled down it will be that way. Lifestyle has been, I would say, in the hectic category right now.Beth: &nbsp;Fair enough, while you’re in the set-up phase of it all. So, your top tips for someone doing it, what would you say they need? &nbsp;A sense of a kind of bravery, I’m sure, for the level of adventure that you did, what else?Tom: &nbsp;Yeah, you have to be committed, and that we were. This is a “no going back” situation for us. Knowing the language is a very big deal, and we both speak Spanish, so that was not an issue. Being open minded and appreciating a different culture is a plus. Don’t go in thinking this is going to be like home, because in many cases it’s not, but in many cases it is, as well, if you just give it a chance.The acceptance of people from other countries here is tremendous. There is not an issue of your British, or your Danish, or whatever. If you’re not British or Danish you are Spanish because that’s about the three nationalities that are here, and then some French, but very few Americans. If somebody is going to make a leap like this, it should be with a real desire to make that leap, not something that you’re always going to be second guessing.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, totally. Good advice, very good advice. Well, I think I’ve reached the end of all my questions, but thank you so much for talking with me today.Tom: &nbsp;Thank you for the service that your website has provided. It was invaluable.Beth: &nbsp;You’re very welcome. I’m glad that it’s worked out so well. I hope that life calms down a little bit over the next couple of months. It sounds like you’re right in the middle of setting up and it’s all going to be amazing, but I’m glad that it was a good process for you.Tom: &nbsp;Yes, yes. Episode 18: Catherine who purchased in Olvera, Cádiz

&nbsp;<h2>Intro</h2>Welcome to the Kyero.com Spanish Property podcast where we interview people who recently purchased a home in Spain.They tell us what worked, what didn’t and what they’d do differently next time.I’m Beth Davison and today I’m speaking with Catherine, originally from Cork, who is enjoying what she call “the greatest love affair,” after purchasing her house in <a href="https://www.kyero.com/en/olvera-property-for-sale-0l6378">Olvera</a>.After seeing her brother get married in Spain she was inspired to move and it was a picture in a magazine, of all things, that began her adventure.She worked with estate agent <a href="https://www.kyero.com/en/spain-property-for-sale-0l55529?agent_id=980">Olvera Properties</a> to find her dream home in Spain.&nbsp;&nbsp;Check out the show notes at <a href="http://kyero.com/podcast">kyero.com/podcast</a> to find links and resources mentioned in this episode<h2>Body of Transcript</h2>Catherine: &nbsp;My name is Catherine. I bought a house in Olvera in 2008 through Olvera Properties who were absolutely wonderful. I really basically had to do nothing. They organised everything for me.Beth: &nbsp;Great, so they were super helpful.Catherine: &nbsp;They were unbelievable, actually, to be honest about it. It was quite by chance that I found them, that I came across them. I was in Antequera and saw an advert for them and decided to travel up. I liked the feel of the place and took it from there. I was dealing with a girl called Zoe who showed me the houses and it was just an easy process once I decided on what house I wanted.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic, so it sounds like it’s a really positive experience. How did it all start for you? It sounds like you knew Spain any way, did you, quite well?Catherine: &nbsp;I knew Spain pretty well, but my brother got married in Antequera and it was the first time that I had gone into the real Spain, as in the country Spain. I had always gone on holidays to Costa del Sol, but my brother, we stayed in Villanueva de La Concepcion, which was a very small village. There was one hundred and twenty of us that went out. I just loved the real Spain. It was such an experience.So, from that, when I found that magazine – there are free magazines in different places and I picked it up and saw Olvera and decided, when I was there for the wedding, to take a trip to Olvera. I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s very pretty Pueblo Blanco. I just couldn’t get it out of my head and then decided to go back on a visit to look at houses. Houses were at their boom then, unfortunately for me, but at the same time I fell in love with it and in 2008 I bought it.Beth: &nbsp;Were you nervous starting off? Did this feel like quite a big venture for you?Catherine: &nbsp;You know what, I actually wasn’t nervous for some reason, but then again I was eight years younger. If I was doing it today I might be slightly nervous. I was eight years younger and I just wanted a place in Spain, but I did not want to be in a commercialised area. This town, it’s a town of eight and half thousand people, so I would consider it a town rather than a village.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, absolutely. So it’s eight years later, and how often do you find yourself over there? What do your visits look like?Catherine: &nbsp;Actually, I’m just back from there now. I came back last week. I go about five times a year to visit and I stay, a minimum stay is seven days, but now that I’m retired I’m thinking that I’ll probably go for three months at a time. I’ll spend May, June, July, and August in Ireland and then I’ll head off the end of August, September, October, November, and then come back for Christmas and then go again. I will spend longer there now.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, that sounds lovely. Is it that kind of simplistic life? I’m guessing it’s less stressful than Ireland?Catherine: &nbsp;If you want to de-stress that’s the place to be. They have the most wonderful vía verdes walking. There are lots of things going on. They have Spanish classes free for Expats. They’re just wonderful people. You walk down the street and everybody says hello to you and you’re wondering why they’re saying hello to you because they don’t know you but they’re lovely. Now that I’m living my dream was always to live on a Spanish street with Spanish neighbours. That was my dream.Beth: &nbsp;And now you have it.Catherine: &nbsp;Now I have it, and every single one of my neighbours know me. They see me every single day, when I’m out there, I spend evenings at dinner in their houses. They look after my house for me. They check my house. My next door neighbour checks my house every day. Nothing happens to my house without me knowing it.Beth: &nbsp;Which is just great. Did you have a good level of Spanish then, if you’ve made all of these Spanish friends?Catherine: &nbsp;I had all words, and I still have. They say every time I go I get better and better, but by the time I’m about to leave. Fortunately for me, my neighbour’s husband speaks English. He’s Spanish but he speaks English. If I’m stuck I Google Translate.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, technology is a wonderful thing.Catherine: &nbsp;Technology is wonderful. I do intend to really buck up and try and speak Spanish fluently, but I find when I come back to Ireland I forget about it and then I cram in maybe three weeks before I go I’m back studying Spanish again. You know, with Google Translate, it’s wonderful. Spanish people are just wonderful and Spanish country people are wonderful.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, because you’re outside of the towns and there’s much more of a community. Let’s talk about the property itself. So what exactly did you buy? Can you describe it for us?Catherine: &nbsp;The property I bought is relatively small. It is open plan, sitting room and kitchen and then on the first floor there are two bedrooms but one bedroom only fits a single bed and behind that, then, there’s a toilet and wash hand basin. The double bedroom is relatively big and airy and then you go up the stairs again and you have a laundry and a bathroom and a roof terrace. I’m overlooking just olive groves, complete olive groves.Beth: &nbsp;Great, and was it the first place that you saw? How many viewings did you go on after you’d seen this magazine, and seen the pictures and driven up there.Catherine: &nbsp;I didn’t know. I looked at a lot of properties. I looked at Pruna and Olvera because they’re both relatively close because they cover Pruna as well. I didn’t like Pruna. I thought it was a little bit too small. I liked Olvera from the point of view that there was more of a population and you would be more anonymous, but I was more into the Spanish way rather than the Expats way. I think that’s what cinched it for me. My street, I have a bar five doors down on the left and I have a bar six doors up on the right.Beth: &nbsp;(Laughter) Very good.Catherine: &nbsp;It’s a hunting community. It’s a farming community, so I fit in quite well because I’m a country girl myself at heart.Beth: &nbsp;Lovely. And did you say auctioneering was how you go this property?Catherine: &nbsp;No, no, no, I spent three days looking at houses with Zoe and in the end I just went with the one that I felt most comfortable in. Olvera is a very hilly town and I wanted to be on the flat part. So, I had a choice of two houses, really, on the flat and the one I picked I’m very happy with.Beth: &nbsp;Lovely, and it sounds like there’s a guest room then, do you have people to visit.Catherine: &nbsp;Not so much, I don’t really, no, nobody is interested in coming up. A few people have indicated that they’d like to visit but I think, for my children, they’re still young and they want the Costa del Sols of the world. Maybe when they have children they’ll come to Olvera. They would feel a little bit isolated up there. I think that a certain age group fits in very well to Olvera when you’re finished partying in Costa del Sol you will start going inland.Beth: &nbsp;Fair enough, and it sounds like it a lovely and relaxed environment, so I can totally see the appeal.Catherine: &nbsp;It is and everybody is really nice of there. The people are very lovely. They do tend to speak their own Spanish, if you can imagine and you may be from London and trying to understand somebody from Newcastle. It’s not a great place to learn Spanish because they tend to speak like country people and they only say half their words.Beth: &nbsp;Right, OK, as if it wasn’t challenging enough.Catherine: &nbsp;Yeah, but at the same time, it’s not a burden at the same time. It’s not at all, not a burden.Beth: &nbsp;So would you do anything differently, if you were going to do it all again?Catherine: &nbsp;Well, hindsight is a wonderful thing. If I was going to do it all again I would have bought a bigger house.Beth: &nbsp;Interesting, OK.Catherine: &nbsp;But at the time, houses were at their peak in Olvera and I did what I did with the budget that I had.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, we haven’t talked about budget. Do you mind if I ask what it was?Catherine: &nbsp;The house was sixty-nine thousand.Beth: &nbsp;Lovely, OK.Catherine: &nbsp;And I wouldn’t get fifty thousand for it today.Beth: &nbsp;Does that worry you, the depreciation, or was that never a goal for you in the first place?Catherine: &nbsp;No, it was never a goal for me. I just wanted a house that I could escape to. I had a very pressurised job. I managed a big hotel. I just used to get on the plane in Cork and get off at Malaga and the minute I hit Olvera I was a different person.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah.Catherine: &nbsp;That was my aim. That was my aim really the money… I was out there last week looking at other houses and I decided not to bother. I’m sixty years of age now. I’m not going to bother trying to get what I should have gotten, maybe in the first place. I’m just going to renovate the house that I have now.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, fantastic. It sounds like it suits you perfectly. You don’t feel too cramped there.Catherine: &nbsp;No, I’m not, I’m not. There are two of us there and we’re not cramped at all, at all. It suits us. But if I was to have, say, two people come it might not suit.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, fair enough. So, for more guests you’d go bigger. Do you think that this will be the first property that you buy and you’ll now look seriously at others, or are you content to just renovate?Catherine: &nbsp;No, I’m content, now, to renovate. I’ll going to put about ten, twenty thousand into the house that I have and I’m very content.Beth: &nbsp;Lovely, OK, fantastic.Catherine: &nbsp;You know, if they come out, there’s two hotels in the town. I checked the prices of hotels for my son, his wife, and their baby for one week in June and it’s only coming to five hundred Euros.Beth: &nbsp;Oh wow, lovely, so that’s great for them.Catherine: &nbsp;Prices are not like what they are down the coast.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, fair enough.Catherine: &nbsp;You know, Olvera really is, I’ve always looked as Olvera as being the gateway to Andalucia because, one, it’s only twenty-five minutes away from me. Seville is only what, maybe fifty minutes away and Taquera is only fifty minutes away. There are so many places: Cordoba Granada, it is really the gateway to Andalucia.Beth: &nbsp;Absolutely, and do you like going to the cities? Have you visited Seville much?Catherine: &nbsp;Oh yeah, I do. I love it.Beth: &nbsp;I love Seville, I think it’s great.Catherine: &nbsp;I love it and I love Antequera. I often thought about maybe a house in Antequera but I’m quite content being fifteen minutes away and I go in on shopping sprees. I will always go to Antequera and Seville. It is good.Beth: &nbsp;Of the process, which part did you find the most challenging?Catherine: &nbsp;Umm, I’m trying to think. I think probably the most challenging was probably the NIE number even though Zoe organised it all. I hadn’t done that before, going in and trying to sort it out. Luckily she spoke Spanish so I didn’t have a problem but it was just the finer details.The notary was no problem, the bank was no problem. It was the finer details that I had, and of course then coming up with eight per cent that was fees, taxes and all different things on top of what your spending. But I’m saying that it was really all very calm.Beth: &nbsp;OK. Interesting. Where did you learn things like that? Where did you learn that you’d need an additional eight per cent in order to cover everything?Catherine: &nbsp;The estate agent made me very aware of… it was all itemised for me, what I would have to pay.Beth: &nbsp;Fantastic.Catherine: &nbsp;There were no surprises, to be quite honest about it. I just had to come up. I actually was lucky that I had twenty per cent of the price of the house. I was very lucky that I had that money, but I’m saying that the bank was very accommodating.Beth: &nbsp;Yeah, and it sounds like you had a helping hand. There were always people to ask. There were always people to talk to. You weren’t left on your own at any point?Catherine: &nbsp;No, I was never left on my own, and even eight years later I’m not left on my own because I need an architect now and I’ve actually dialled up the estate agent and she’s going to find me an architect to draw up plans.Beth: &nbsp;Amazing, eight years later and you still have her number.Catherine: &nbsp;Yeah, eight years later and she is always at the other end of the phone for me.Beth: &nbsp;Great, that’s perfect. So, my last question is, if you could give top tips to people starting the process right at the beginning at the moment, what would your top tips be?Catherine: &nbsp;Have a good serious look around at all houses in all areas. That’s my first tip. Secondly, make sure that you have at least twenty per cent. I think it’s important to have at least twenty percent of your money that you’re going to put down on the house. Thirdly, just go with it, go with it. Just decide whether you want a holiday home or a permanent home. Most people think they just want a holiday home when they’re going for it, like I did. But then, automatically as you get older, it turns into maybe a forever home.Beth: &nbsp;So flexibility is crucial.Catherine: &nbsp;Yeah, be very, very sure.
